Solidarity with the Bus Drivers!

This is the scene on a wet and cold Thursday morning with the wind blowing in your eyes.

London's bus workers are on strike - this is the picket line.

More importantly, there are very few buses on the roads.

Most of them are stuck in the Bus garage!

Bus workers used to be active, militant union members who fought for their rights from the 1930's to the 1980's.

Thatcher then opened the door to some so called competition. So called, because we subsidise the buses like the rest of public transport. It's just that now business people profit from our buses instead of us.

The bus drivers became employees of many scrooge employers who played one group of workers against another.

The price of disunity? Some bus drivers in London earn £12 an hour, others earn £9 an hour for the same work.

It's time to change all that.....which is why they are striking.

Support the Firefighters!

These photos come from Egham Fire Station this afternoon; you wouldn't realise it from reading the papers or watching the news but the Firefighters are on strike for four days.

The Firemen and women are fighting against plans to force them to work for ten years longer before they get their pensions and being made to pay higher contributions too.

The problem? Many firefighters will fail their physical long before they retire and then they lose their job and a large proportion of their pension as a result.

Now it's payback time; we need to support the Firefighters who protect us;

Support the Firefighters!

Support out Firefighters!

As you'll know if you are a regular reader of this Blog - I support workers in struggle.

On Friday night, as me and Robyn were lost in South London well after midnight on our way back from watching the Ali Maas Bluesband we came across Wimbledon Firestation.

Outside the station there was a nice fire blazing which means, as you can see, the Firefighters are currently on 8 days of rolling 2 hour strikes in opposition to their employers attempts to reduce their pension rights and increase further the age at which they can retire.

Already the former retirement age of 50 has turned into 55 years and the new proposal is that our courageous firefighters will have to work on until they are 60 years old.

They already pay some of the highest pension contributions in the country - the intention seems to be that if they have to work long enough they will fail their fitness checks and lose their jobs as well as their pensions.

Are we going to let that happen?

Some of Wimbledon's firefighters came to our part of the country when we were flooded in the spring - along with crews from up and down the country (you can check this out on my Blog for March and April).

More importantly, this is a dangerous physical job and it's not something anyone can do properly at 55.

If you don't believe me have a look at my Blog commemorating Clifford Cox, a firefighter who collapsed and died while fighting the floods in Staines.
here's the link;

So, support our Firefighters - you may need them one day!

Solidarity with the Firefighters.

This is Egham Fire Station today, 12th June 2014. The Firefighters are on strike for 24 hours to protect their pensions.

We rely on them and must support their struggle, which is just.

In Surrey, there should be no argument that later retirement is a bad thing; just have a look at my memorial to FireFighter Clifford Cox, who died in the line of duty this spring.

This is an official picket line, do not cross;
