Meeting Matthew.
A few weeks ago we bumped into Matthew who plays bass for 'Tapestry', a local band we used to see at The Hobgoblin in Staines before the owners turned the music off for good.
I've been ill all week and it's finally given me a chance to check out his new solo e.p. which is called "Chapter One".
If you want to hear it (it's not what you would expect from me) here's the link to soundcloud;
https://soundcloud.com/matthew-g…/…/matthew-tinnuche-one-man
Matthew describes it as 'Looped Percussive Acoustic Ambient' music.......which is not really my thing at all.
But he's very good at it an Robyn tells me I should forget about The Hobgoblin and listen to more of this kind of thing!
I'm not sure about that but if you want to hear some relaxing, well played solo ambient you can find Matthew Williams/ One man on Facebook and he performs live too.

Tapestry and The Wicked Venetians at The Hobgoblin Rockgoblin.
So anyway, at The last ever Rockgoblin I was passing out under a very silly mask I made for myself and taking pictures through a couple of tiny eye holes.
We tended to watch bands we'd seen before and liked (it's an age thing).....starting with 'Tapestry';
It's the second time we've seen them - as a band they are really getting it together. We both noticed the difference from a couple of months ago;
See what I mean?
This is a band who thrive on headlining - check them out if you can and by that I mean I'm hoping there's one last chance to see them at The Hob.
Tomorrow I'll review 'The Lagan', 'Eat the Evidence and 'Cultural other'.
It was quite a night, you should have been there.

That's Mathew Williams in the middle playing bass. You can catch him back at The Hob on 5th November when he is playing solo acoustic guitar. It's thoughtful, clever stuff.
Not on Saturday it wasn't - it was stomping;

And then there were 'The Wicked Venetians' - if you follow this Blog you will have got bored with hearing about them from me.
I really like what they do - have a look at their videos on YouTube, have a look at them on facebook.
They came as 'Three Blind Mice' and were definitely the best dressed band of the night....they had tails!
See what I mean?

Tapestry, These Sceptic Stars and Robotboy at the Hobgoblin.
Saturday night and we're at The Hobgoblin to see UKID from Glastonbury. I'll be doing a separate blog about them tomorrow - any excuse to post more pictures of this incredible band.
There were still three other bands to see first - this is 'Robotboy' making their first public appearance.....at The Hob;
Not a bad start - I hope to watch them develop, meanwhile here are 'These Sceptic Stars';
Not sure about the stage clothes but we liked some of the music;
If you remember, I reviewed 'One Man' a few weeks ago, a solo acoustic set from Matthew Williams? Technically brilliant but I was lukewarm because I was looking for 'punch'?
I got plenty of that tonight; this is Matthew in the middle on his bass guitar;
Plenty of 'punch' tonight!
And this is how to end a set;

48 Hours, One Man and Cultural Other at The Hobgoblin.
Saturday night at The Hobgoblin, Staines, thank goodness it's back after a long, long summer of sport and it really was a classic Hob night too.
This is 'One Man' - Matthew Williams from Egham;
Everybody wanted to take his picture - there was a queue.
As you can see, Mathew was playing an acoustic guitar with an array of effects pedals and 'loops' which gave him a chance to show off his virtuosity.
It's not my kind of thing; I like my music to have 'punch', to be immediate.
Everybody else thought he was great - Robyn told me it was like 'Accoustic Techno' and explained the different influences and styles he was playing. She's a big fan.
This is what I was there for; 48 Hours. I've seen them before - full of fire and excitement;
Lots of action making for a storming night;
Then there was 'Cultural Other' - much more thoughtful music;
Their influences come from all around the world and their music was lyrical and inventive.
A contrast to end the night but I still preferred 48 hours!
Three great bands (OK two and a half bands?), all local and all playing original material.
Check out this great venue for yourself.
